Breaking records takes a community, especially when the focus is on supporting first-generation college students.
In November, Chattanooga State Community College's annual Dinner of Firsts raised a record-breaking $130,454 for scholarships for first-generation students, which helps students across all degree and certificate programs pursue and complete credentials that open doors to family-sustaining careers.
This year's fundraising dinner honored Tiffanie Robinson, Managing Partner and CEO of Aslan Holdings. A first-generation college graduate herself, Robinson bravely took the stage to be roasted by friends and colleagues in the name of access, mentorship, and support for future students.
Since its inception in 2012, the Dinner of Firsts has generated $991,677 in scholarship support for students who are the first in their families to attend college. Today, the endowed scholarship fund stands at $421,077, while $570,600 has already been awarded through annual First in the Family Scholarships to students pursuing brighter futures.
“This event represents the very best of our community: people coming together to champion opportunity for first-generation students,” said Tammy Sawyers, ChattState’s director of advancement. “Every gift, every table sponsorship, every moment of laughter in that room helps open doors for students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education.”
Held at The Chattanoogan Hotel, the celebration brought together 370 guests and was made possible by 47 corporate and individual table sponsors, along with many individual supporters. The event was presented by First Horizon Foundation and Morning Pointe Senior Living, longtime champions of student success and community growth.
Tom White served as Event Chair, with Terran Anderson guiding the evening as Master of Ceremonies. Kyle Bryant, Mickey Cloud, Kristina Montague, Mike Robinson, and Kirby Yost joined in roasting Robinson, bringing laughter and connection to a night rooted in meaningful impact.
Presenting sponsors and evening co-hosts Jay Dale, Market President of First Horizon Bank, and Greg Vital, President and Co-Founder of Morning Pointe Senior Living, emphasized the importance of investing in students and the long-term impact that support has on families and the community.
The success of the Dinner of Firsts was also driven by a dedicated team of volunteers led by Tom White, including Jill Allen, Dennis Culver, Carol Eimers, Julie Elsea, Kelly Fitzgerald, Bobby Lusk, Meredith Rivers, Keith Sanford, Edna Varner, Penny Walker, and Kirby Yost.
Through first in the family scholarships, the ChattState Foundation brings access, support, and community investment together, helping ensure that being first is a beginning, not a barrier.
